Season 11/12 - Tournament
Castle Combe Colts enjoyed a record-breaking weekend as more than 1,000 young footballers descended on the village for the club’s six-a-side tournament.
The annual festival continues to grow in popularity and was full to capacity for the first time this year, with 160 teams taking part – a 25 per cent increase on the 2011 entry.
Colts’ U10s Yellows were among the triumphant teams after overcoming their Whites club-mates in a close final. FC Chippenham, Stanley Park and FC Calne also helped themselves to silverware, while Malmesbury scored a fair play award double in the youngest U7s and U8s categories.
Delighted Colts chairman Trevor Newman said: "We are extremely proud of the way our facilities look and perform during this massive event - a green and pleasant field in one of England’s acknowledged prettiest villages is always going to take some beating. The club ethos is all about football for all, an inclusive environment and respect. Our guest teams picked up on that and conducted themselves impeccably, meaning that they were a credit to their own clubs and also generated an atmosphere of positivity. There was adversity on the field as well as glory, but these were both dealt with in exactly the right way."
“Our army of volunteers were simply amazing and created an efficient, professional-looking tournament, hiding the fact that so much work was going on behind the scenes. This is the type of thing that makes our tournament 'first pick' for our friends at other clubs."
