U9 League Cup: CCCFC Whites 2 Bradford Tn Panthers 1 (aet) |
Season 12/13 - Under 9 Black & White |
Cup football is supposed to be exciting and Castle Combe Colts Whites and Bradford Town Panthers served up an absolute cracker on their debut in knockout competition. Both sides went into the game with 100 per cent league records and it took extra-time – a real novelty for the under-9s – to separate them as Colts eventually booked their place in the first round. Colts put in a really good shift playing up the slope, with great wing play from Toby and George creating a number of chances. They were unlucky to fall behind to a shot through a crowded area before winning a penalty for handball at the other end. Birthday boy Matthew stepped up to take it but the Bradford keeper was equal to his powerful effort. The hosts kept their composure, though, and deservedly levelled when the excellent Toby drove home from the edge of the area. Max, Bradley and the pacy Tom all had opportunities in the second half as the hard-working Matthew and Luke pulled the strings in midfield but the nervous-looking Colts attack could not find their shooting boots. Bradford always threatened on the counter-attack and their fast-breaking attack caused a few moments of alarm. Second-half keeper Toby made a couple of late stops and Josh and Brandon made a number of crucial blocks and clearances. With the prospect of penalties looming large, Max took the gloves for extra time and gave a masterclass in how to command a penalty area to deny Bradford a sniff in front of goal. As the play became stretched, Bradley stole a march on the last Bradford defender and lashed a volley past the keeper to send the fraught home supporters into raptures. He almost added to his tally in the second period as the visitors left holes at the back but the hosts had done enough to progress following a thrilling contest. |
