Season 12/13 -
Under 9 Black & White

A memorable first season of competitive football came to a close in fitting fashion for the Whites, who struck three times in a devastating five-minute spell to secure both victory and the runners-up spot in Division 1. Traffic congestion around Castle Combe Circuit meant the Colts surrendered home advantage for their last game of the campaign and made the trip to Bradford on Avon RFC for the second time in three weeks. The previous meeting had ended all-square after a slightly below-par par Colts performance but they went into the return fixture on the crest of a wave after away victories over Melksham and champions Westbury. Adopting the attacking formation that worked so well in the latter match, Colts were on the front foot playing into a strong wind as Toby and Matthew seized control of midfield and Luke and Tom marshalled the defence expertly. Their rhythm was interrupted midway through the half as Bradford threatened through some good passing and movement around the Colts area. Keeper Max was alert to the danger, though, while Josh and Tom produced excellent blocks to foil the Panthers. Toby then curled a sublime shot from distance against the underside of the bar at the other end and it proved the signal for the Colts to raise their game once more. They quickly went ahead when Bradley tore down the left and sent an inviting low cross towards the far post, where a gleeful George was waiting to tap home. Bradley was running the Panthers defence ragged and again won possession before laying the ball back to Toby, who deservedly got his name on the scoresheet with a cross-cum-shot that floated in off the far post. Still the Whites were not finished and, when Panthers failed to clear Toby’s corner, Tom’s thunderous shot flew through a crowded box and into the roof of the net to give them a three-goal interval lead. The second half was played in pouring rain – fairly typically for mid-May – and, despite creating numerous chances, the Colts were unable to add to their advantage despite now having the wind at their backs. Luke and Matthew proved a formidable partnership in midfield, breaking up Bradford’s counter-attacks with some tough tackling and creating opportunities whenever they had the ball. Forwards George and Brandon, who led the line well, gave determined displays and were unlucky not to cash in after taking up good positions inside the box. Bradford committed more players forward in a bid to salvage something from the game but their pressure gave Max the chance to showcase the goalkeeping skills that earned him the player of the year award the night before. He made one outstanding diving save to turn away a shot to his right and effortlessly plucked a number of crosses out of the air. When he was finally beaten in the closing seconds, Bradley was on hand to clear the danger as a Bradford forward prepared to pull the trigger. An excellent result rounded off a season in which the Whites also topped the Orange Division table and came within a penalty shootout of a League Cup final appearance. After starting their Division 1 campaign with two morale-sapping defeats, they bounced back to finish the season with an eight-match unbeaten run – all of them against high-quality opposition. Things really clicked in the last three games and the chance to try and go one better in 2013-14 is one all concerned with the Whites are relishing. The boys have been an absolute credit to the club, their parents and themselves this term and, throughout their football careers, will always be able to look back on what they achieved as under-9s with a huge amount of pride.
