U9s: Westbury tournament triumph |
Season 12/13 - Under 9 Black & White |
CCCFC U9s Whites finally - and deservedly - got their hands on some silverware at the Westbury Youth six-a-side tournament following a dramatic penalty shootout success over Wootton Bassett Town in the final. The team had come agonisingly close on numerous occasions in recent months, finishing second in Division 1 and losing on spot-kicks in the cup semi-finals before a succession of near-misses at tournaments across the area. They had finished as runners-up to strong opposition at both Frome Town and Corsham and reached the last four at Highworth Town, Trowbridge Town and FC Calne, with penalties again proving their downfall in the latter two. After progressing from their group and then confidently through the knockout stages at Westbury, seeing off Trowbridge Wanderers and Devizes Town, the Whites faced their toughest challenge of the day in the shape of a slick Bassett side. The game ended goalless, despite the Whites enjoying the upper hand, and the keepers were again on top amid high tension in the shootout. Six penalties were taken by both sides and Max and Brandon H emerged as the Whites' heroes. Both held their nerve to score from the spot, with Max also pulling off four outstanding stops to deny Bassett the trophy. With no substitutes on the day, it took a huge effort from the six boys on duty and Bradley, Matthew, Luke and Tom all got their names on the scoresheet en route to the final. The Blacks, meanwhile, battled well to qualify for the Shield competition after tough opening group games against Bassett and Westbury A. They drew with eventual Shield winners FC Colerne and Wincanton to set up a quarter-final with Bradford Town. James gave them the lead and Brandon netted a late equaliser to take the tie to penalties. Will produced off a great save to keep the Blacks in it but it was Bradford who prevailed. Tyvaan made a promising debut, while Luca and Kyron also played important roles for the team.
