Season 16/17 - Under 14 White

The lads lined up with local bragging rights at stake - with so many of the lads being schoolmates, that was always going to be the case. The guys chose exactly the right moment to raise their game and snapped into the task with relish.

An energetic, combative midfield of JoeP, JJ, Alex, Mad Max and Archie revelled in a slight change in formation to grab control of the game and dominate their opponents. Zac was introduced into this midfield frequently and had his most impressive game so far as well.

I wont pretend that we played better football than our friends from Calne, but they were merely left with scraps of posession to create chances while we kept the presure on and looked to release Cam and Louie whenever we could. One incisive long PASS from Archie released the fleet footed Cameron and we all know if he gets behind you, you aint catching him! He was able to finish this time to give his side a well deserved lead. Our parents were bristling with pride and they had every right to.

Then - in a crucial 5 mins just before half time we lost our skipper to a late challenge and we unfortunately also gave away a soft goal from a long range free kick literally on the whistle - both issues proved to be important to the course of the game.

Having said that - after half time the lads re-established their vice like grip on the game - Max, JoeN, JoeG, Jacob and Nathan were superb at the back in shifts. Alex came off the treatment table breifly to rifle a RIGHT FOOTED volleyed goal  (!) and restablish the lead, before limping off again. At this stage (again) it was deserved, but from that point on Calne got more posession and moved nearer our goal. The equaliser when it came was a cracking finish from the left back into the top corner - one of those goals that no-one is at fault for.

Our chaps were getting tired and the work rate dropped slightly, another unfortunate injury robbed us of Cam and one of our release ball options. On two seperate occasions towards the end of the game, we were just too slow in clearing a ball from our box and Calne grabbed the lead back- Shame.

Whilst we could be called a little naive in allowing our opponents back into a game we had by the scruff of the neck - you have to give them some credit, they are a fine side. I have to say though there was only one side smiling at the end. Im pretty sure we were all very proud of ourselves, our supporters and our team mates - and thats one of the major reasons we are here isnt it?

Man of the match - Nathan and the two wing backs were very close, I have to give it to Archie though for dominating one of the best midfields in the league. Well played everyone.
